The BGC is becoming something more than just a friendly competition between offices. In conjunction with the Big Green Commute, ZGF Architects is making a contribution to Community of Hope, a BGC participant, to establish The Big Green Commuting Fund. Community of Hope will use the fund to provide homeless families and low-income patients with resources to commute in sustainable manners. These resources might include public transportation fares (i.e. Metro day passes or SmartTrip cards), bicycles, bicycle safety equipment, Capital Bikeshare, or other environmental friendly resources.
Founded in 1980, Community of Hope works to improve the health and quality of life for low-income, homeless, and underserved families and individuals in the District of Columbia by providing healthcare, housing with supportive services, educational opportunities, and spiritual support. Community of Hope was recognized by the Washington Post for the 2012 Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management. In addition to this green project, Community of Hope has also recently partnered with the DC Sustainable Energy Utility to install energy-efficient CFL light bulbs in the homes of our rapid rehousing families.
